PROLOGUE

In a further step toward reality, the philosophy for life and for education is under-
going a most important, though subtle, change. So subtle that many are unaware of it.

We, the editors of the 1974 Chieftain, think that it is important enough to try to
bring it to the attention of our peers.

Competition, whether group or self-, has been an American way of life. It has paid
off for many, especially those who were and are highly motivated and well endowed -
physically and/or mentally. Even they, however, find an emptiness at the end of their
road for there is nowhere else to go.

However, now that the philosophy is changing from competition to challenge, oppor-
tunities are endless for all. Challenge is unlimited. All can live with this philosophy
and feel rewarded. The least of us can take one step, one word, one problem, one hur-
dle at a time. Each one met and coped with is one overcome and builds up the strength
and stamina to meet the next one.

There is no end to challenge; it is built into our everyday lives. King Philip pre-
sents us with all kinds of challenges - in learning, in sports, in social acceptance.
Here is the chance to practice, to meet the kinds of challenges that will be an innate
characteristic of our lives and our world.

Epilogue

"The beginning of the battle is the acceptance of the challenge". Hopefully,
we, the editors of the 1974 Chieftain, have depicted for you both "the chal-
lenge" and "the acceptance" in our King Philip world - an experiential plus for
the greater challenges that life will demand we face.

Seniors:

Accept the challenges, whatever they may be, whether of life or career. Beware the false friend and the
false promise. However, do not become cynical or distrustful of that which is good or can be made good.
There is more of truth, love and beauty in this world than there is of evil, hate and ugliness.

Be one who will help to balance the scales on the side of truth, love and beauty and you will be happy.

Sincerely,
The Class of 1975
